General Douglas MacArthur
General Douglas MacArthur is one of the smartest and most controversial General’s in American history. He is one of the most brilliant strategists we have. He was a real hero of war. Both by the military and by all the prisoners on the Philippines who he freed (Danzer 583). As a leader, MacArthur had a brilliant grasp of strategy and he had greater success at sea, land and air forces than anyone else (Douglas 1). I left MacArthur in the Philippines until July 1941, because of the mounting concern of war with the country Japan. Then on December 7, 1940 The Japanese planes attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Seven hours later, MacArthur was notified of the attack. He increased his air patrols, but laughed at the idea of being attacked in force before April. On December 8, Japanese aircraft raided the Philippines. MacArthur then rashly chose to meet the invaders on the beaches. He had 10,000 American soldiers, 11,000 elite Philippine scouts and finally he had 100,000 poorly trained Filipino army regulars (Douglas 4). Then the Japanese forced MacArthur to declare Manila an open city to the semi-fortified Bataan peninsula. The Americans had shortages and a lack of reinforcement. I saw that this was their defeat. In February 1942, my administration directed MacArthur and his staff to leave the Philippines for Australia (Douglas 5). As MacArthur left, he pledged to the thousands of men who did not make it out that he shall return (Danzer 579). Major General Jonathon Wainwright took over command of the remaining Allied forces in the Philippines. On April 9, with morale low and the forces exhausted, Wainwright surrendered to the Japanese (Philippines 2). MacArthur was still a very good general. In August 1942, he directed Australian and U.S. land forces in the defense of Port Moresby, New Guinea. MacArthur strategic brilliance became very noticeable when he adopted a policy of “island hopping.” This was bypassing enemy strong points in favor or weaker targets. Then you would isolate them with sea and air power. By doing this, large Japanese formations, including the 18th Army were cut off and left to starve. MacArthur was assisted by George C. Kenney and Robert L. Eichelberger. MacArthur’s forces wound themselves toward the Philippines at very little cost to themselves. At the same time, it inflicted heavy casualties on the Japanese. Another achievement of MacArthur was getting possession of Philippine islands. MacArthur thought getting these islands would be a morale booster (Douglas 5). He successfully captured the islands and won am promotion to general the army (Douglas 6). Due to the great achievements of MacArthur, this is why he is considered one of the best generals in America (Danzer 583).
